Message from Linda: Did you ever walk into a department store and need help but find no one in sight? Worse yet, when you did see a clerk, it almost seemed as if they were running AWAY! I have found myself in that circumstance, made a choice based upon what I knew, and at times, I have made a wrong selection and have had to return the item. But, you can't do that with your insurance – most times, you find you don't get what you assumed you were getting until you're presenting a claim. By then, it's too late. When was the last time you got good advice? When was the last time somebody wasn't too busy to take the time to help you understand your best options or to straighten out something really confusing? If you haven't had that experience with your insurance, we'd like to invite you to inquire with our agency. Over the years, I've slowly hand-picked what I believe are some of the most outstanding people here at the agency to serve you – they are individuals who have high standards of morality, possess kindness and understanding, and who are skilled in various aspects of insurance products and customer service. Want a different kind of experience than you've been having lately? Come see us – this is a place where relationships matter. Commercial / Business Insurance – Our agency specializes in many types of commercial / business insurance – here are just a few examples: contractors, apartment buildings, offices, retailers, service companies, garages, and much more. When was the last time you got a second opinion on your business insurance? For some businesses, the annual cost for insurance can be one of many expenses significant to the “bottom line”. It's important that your needs are carefully reviewed and that a plan is presented to you for ALL of your needs, not just a plagiarized quote of your current carrier. Having the right coverage can save you from financial disaster. Did you know that the laws regarding workers compensation state that if you don't purchase workers compensation, you could be fined $200 per day from the date it was determined you should have had the coverage in effect? Did you know that you could possibly be imprisoned? It may be considered a FELONY.
Having a low insurance cost is appealing, but not when it puts everything in your world at risk. Feeling a little unsafe? Call us for that second opinion! Long Term Care – “My kids will take care of me – I'm not worried – I don't need this coverage”. How many people in the senior market think this is true? How many 50+ year old children of the senior market can provide such care? Many times, adult children of aging parents are at the pinnacles of their lives – their children have active lives needing their attention, resources and support – maybe they're involved in sports and working on scholarships and need you to be there for them physically and financially. Maybe you're at the height of your career and have many people reporting to you. What if you yourself, the adult child, have health or financial problems? Chances are somebody in your family is going to need such care. Picture yourself in this situation for a moment. Maybe insurance for such times in life is the solution - you would have resources, professional help, peace of mind, and the level of care needed for such times in life.

Growing Older, Growing Wiser, Growing…Trouble?
By Tia C. Seier

Did you ever take time out to think about how your life is going to change as you grow older? It's something you probably did a lot as a kid, but as an adult, life gets busy, and there isn't much time to think about your future. The alarming truth, however, is that as people grow older, they're more likely to develop health problems that require not only medical attention but a possible change of residence as well. And that's just one reason why planning ahead for your “golden years” is so important. Today, long term care has become more prevalent than ever. Part of this is due to advanced medical technology resulting in longer life expectancies. A baby born in the United States today can expect to live almost 80 years, and that number keeps increasing every year. As the number of years increase, so too do the number of people who need assistance with the daily activities of living, including bathing, eating, and dressing. For some, this means family members or friends serve as primary caregivers, but for most, this means a move to a nursing home or other assisted living facility. Without careful planning and consideration, many people could be setting their family members or friends up for a responsibility they can't handle. Imagine having to worry about your loved one calling you at work because they ran out of food. And just think, that would be the least of your worries if you're caring for someone who may need immediate medical attention. That isn't to say you don't want to take care of your loved ones; rather, it signifies you can't take of your loved ones. Members of the baby boom generation know this all too well. Many have to balance raising their children and caring for their parents on top of a busy career. Long term care includes the costs of living in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or receiving assistance in your home when you're no longer able to perform routine daily activities. While these services are convenient, they're also expensive. Moreover, 25% of these costs are paid by the patient themselves, not Medicaid or Medicare. The Linda Krisko Insurance Agency is now offering long term care coverage, which provides many with a sense of security about their future. Everything from home health aides, hospice care, and adult day care costs are covered under this long term care policy. Not only are services provided in the home covered, but services provided outside the home are covered as well. Although many people don't like to think about it, the reality is that when you're older, you will likely have to move to an assisted or full service living facility. These facilities are able to provide care for the elderly and give their family members the security of knowing they are well taken care of. But are they? The reality is that if a patient in a assisted living facility or nursing home needs to go to the hospital, their room is not automatically saved for them. However, if the patient has long term care coverage, it helps ensure their room will be waiting for them upon their return. Considering long term care insurance is wise not only for you, but for your family too. It provides you with a sense of security you otherwise wouldn't have, while relieving your family members of worry and stress. With long term care insurance, everyone wins.

Do you have that sinking feeling?
By Tia C. Seier

Imagine driving down your street and finding that half your house has been swallowed by the earth. No, this isn't a dream nor a scene from the latest disaster film; it's the reality of a sinkhole victim. Next, imagine calling your insurance company and finding that the damage to your home isn't covered. What are you going to do now? Increasingly, sinkholes are becoming a problem, especially here in the Lehigh Valley. In 1994, Allentown's Corporate Plaza building had to be demolished because of damage caused by a sinkhole. Recently, other sinkholes have opened up in Easton and Allentown, wreaking havoc on victims' lives. What's even more unfortunate for these people was that the damage caused to their homes wasn't covered by their homeowners policy. In fact, most people are unaware that sinkholes aren't covered under their homeowners policy, even though some insurance companies offer it as an extra endorsement. The Lehigh Valley sits on what's known as carbonate bedrock, a mixture of limestone and dolomite. This type of rock dissolves easily, and areas with dissolved carbonate bedrock are referred to as karst topography, which commonly features sinkholes. Karst topography poses enough of a problem left alone, but with the addition of urban developments, problems are magnified. When land surfaces are paved over, there's less soil available for storm water to drain into. Locally, agricultural/vacant lots represent only 20.7% of land in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton combined. Without soil to soak into, storm water can collect in a karst area, dissolving bedrock and increasing the chance for sinkhole formation. (Lehigh Valley Planning Commission; http://www.lvpc.org/) Storm water was the cause of a massive sinkhole in Easton last December. Lack of drainage for storm water resulted in a water main break, which washed away large amounts of soil. Without anything to support the overlying ground, it sank and swallowed buildings, streets, and cars. Residents of a South Side Easton apartment building that was condemned were devastated to learn they couldn't return to their homes. The building was declared structurally unstable by a city engineer and was demolished this past April. Earlier this year, several rowhomes on N. Church St. in Allentown were demolished after a sinkhole opened there in late January. Along with the hassle of relocating, homeowners also had to contend with the theft and vandalism of their vacated homes. Not surprisingly, as sinkholes become more prevalent, so do victims' calls for more attention to the matter. In March, Ed Pawlowski, an Allentown mayoral candidate, campaigned for legislators to make sinkhole insurance a requirement. For many, the option of affordable sinkhole endorsement offers homeowners some stability in an otherwise unstable environment.
